How to get practical knowledge of a subject without relying only on books?

A lot of people are still under the belief that books are the only means of knowledge that is available to mankind, and that reading a lot of books makes one intellectual, smart and world-wise. If you look into the book market, you will find hundreds and hundreds of books on a single topic, but the truth is that there is no surety of the fact that the information that is contained in the book is genuine and correct. And this is not something that people are not aware of! This then comes across as surprising to see so many people still relying heavily on books and books alone.

This is no way means that one should completely shun books altogether and rely on other sources to gain information. What this means is that students should be prudent enough to decide when and where to study from which source.  This being said, there are numerous other sources of information also that students can use to gain practical knowledge and to enlighten themselves.

1.     Ask around
This might sound silly, but it is actually one of the best ways to learn new things and to gather information on new topics. This magical solution works most of the times when you ask your teachers and parents to provide you with some information that you are unaware of. It often happens that a book remains ineffective to understand a particular topic, but the same topic is understood easily when explained by someone else, who has a fair knowledge about the subject.

2.     Read magazines
Informative magazines contain a plethora of information and are much more interesting to read than books. They contain a lot of information about topics that you perhaps would have never even wondered about, and the way that information is presented is surely presentable. A lot of images also support the written content, and this then makes for an interesting read. Magazines are available in all genres, so make sure that you subscribe to at least one or two magazines that you like, and develop the habit of reading them often.

3.     Go online
The online world is literally overflowing with knowledge and there is no limit to how much you can learn if you have the passion and desire. Thanks to the internet, you can access information about any topic in just a few seconds and this information is not just restricted to written texts. There are so many videos and flowcharts also that are available on the internet, that are able to explain concepts so much better, and also in a shorter period of time. So the next time you are struggling with a topic, simply go online to YouTube and search for that topic, and you will be stunned at the number of relevant results that you will find.
